1885 New Brunswick ice polo season

This was the 1885 ice polo season in New Brunswick. Games were played at the Lansdowne Rink in Saint John.

There was a spirited game played by the Lansdowne Club at the Lansdowne Rink on January 15.[1] On February 16, the Bluenose polo club published a challenge in the Halifax newspapers to play any team in the Maritimes at the Lansdowne rink.[2]

Lansdowne Polo League

Note: The first team to 3 goals won.

Seven teams were registered in the Lansdowne Polo League - Carleton, Wellington, Maliseet Indians, City, Long Reach, Lansdowne, and the Bluenoses, who won the Saint John city title.

  • 1/19: Bluenoses - Wellington 3:1[3]
  • 1/20: Wellington - Carleton
  • 1/21: Bluenoses - Milicite Indians 3:0 - Milicite players "were arrayed in the gaudy colored pageant of the war-path, half-an-inch of paint on their faces and waving feathers surmounting their well-greased scalp-locks"[4]

Bluenoses roster: R.W. Brown (captain and goal-cover), F. Jones, G. Trites (rushers), J. Sinclair, H. Rubins (half-backs), F. Day (goal-keeper). Indians roster: Ack-you (captain and goal-keeper), Ediwahl (goal cover), Peheyhl, Tebelawahl (half-backs), Ossalamall, Keyhursta (rushers).

  • 1/22: Wellington - Milicite Indians 3:1[5]
  • 1/23: Milicete Indians - Landsowne
  • 1/24: Milicete Indians - Long Reach 3:1[6]
  • 1/26: Bluenoses - Long Reach
  • 2/9: Bluenoses - Wellington 3:1[7]
  • 2/13: Wellington - Carleton 3:1[8]
  • 2/13: Bluenoses - Wellington 3:2[8]

Other games

  • 2/26: Passamaquoddy Indians - Bluenoses 3:0 - took Indians an hour and a half to win; they were a roller polo team[9]

There were polo games set to be played at Lansdowne rink on March 4 and 5 (Wellington facing the winner of the March 4 game), but no results were reported.

Bluenoses were renamed Lansdowne in early March.

  • 3/21: Lansdowne - Victoria 3:1 - Polo Championship, Victoria was a roller polo team[10]
