Icelandic Championship
The Icelandic Championship was a competition held in Iceland prior to the formation of the Icelandic Hockey League for the 1991-92 season.
History
The first, unofficial Icelandic competition was played as a "town competition" (bæjakeppni) between Skautafélag Akureyrar and Skautafélag Reykjavíkur in 1967. There was also a "rapid competition" (hraðkeppni) played. Official town competitions began a year later and continued annually until 1971. There was also a "cup competition" (bikarkeppni) played in 1970.
Play resumed in 1979 and an "Islandsmeistaratitilinn" (Island Competition) was also contested in 1980 and 1982. There was a tournament played in 1986. The last town competition was held in 1991 and the Icelandic Hockey League was contested for the first time the following year. The town competition was revived for one year in 2010.
