The Winnipeg Maple Leafs won the Manitoba Professional Hockey League and became the first recipient of the cup in 1908. Only one challenge reached the trustees and this came from Port Arthur, but since they were not league champions, the challenge was dismissed. Fort William, who were champions of the [[New Ontario Hockey League]], did not issue a challenge. This was likely because the Maple Leafs on their way home from their Stanley Cup challenge, defeated both Fort William and Port Arthur on their home ice. It was hoped that Edmonton, the champions from Alberta, would challenge. The Winnipeg Maple Leafs won the Manitoba Professional Hockey League and became the first recipient of the cup in 1908.
