There was an ice hockey club on Bristow Road (now Yingkou Road) and a game was played on the pond, ending 1:0 after an hour. In 1906, the United States Marine Corps stationed in Beijing (Peking) and the Beijing Youth Christian Association formed the Peking Ice Hockey Club. The Tientsin and Peking clubs began playing interport ice hockey matches in 1906. These were held until 1936, taking place for 31 years without interruption. In December 1918, John W. Fenton of Peking offered the Wharton Cup for ice hockey games between Peking and Tientsin. The latter club won it permanently in 1921 and used it to award the local champion from then on.
