Ice hockey was first played at the bizarrely-shaped rink - featuring a horseshoe-shaped ice pad and a squared-off stage at one end - in 1939. <br />

The [[Blackpool Seagulls]] began play in the [[Midland Intermediate League]] in 1951 and were the main tenant at the rink, initially known as the '''Blackpool Ice Drome''', for over 40 years.<br />

The Ice Drome featured a [[Blackpool Icedrome Trophy|home tournament]] where the team with the best goal average from the preliminary round returned to face the home side Seagulls in the final.<br />
