The series on the history of amateur ice hockey in the Southern United States is divided into three parts:

  • Greensboro - There was youth hockey in Greensboro as early as 1961
  • Fort Lauderdale - The South Florida Hockey Association, comprised of Pee Wee, Junior, and Senior leagues, started in 1963
  • Knoxville - The Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association dated back to 1963
  • Huntsville - There was youth hockey played by 1963 and the Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association was soon formed
  • Nashville - Nashville Youth Hockey Association was formed in 1964
  • Memphis - The Memphis Amateur Hockey League began in 1966
  • St. Petersburg - Youth hockey began in September 1966
  • Charlotte - The Charlotte Hockey Association for amateur hockey was established in 1967
  • Atlanta - The Georgia Amateur Hockey Association was formed in 1972-73, after the arrival of the NHL's Atlanta Flames; Atlanta Knights dated back to 1969
  • Roanoke - Amateur hockey in Roanoke goes back to the early 1970s, when the Valley Youth Hockey Association was created. First recorded games were played in 1971
  • Norfolk - A youth hockey program began in September 1972, the Greater Tidewater Minor Hockey Association was formed in early 1973, and the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association was established in 1975 (as the Peninsula Youth Hockey Association)
  • Charlottesville - The Charlottesville Youth Hockey League was active by 1973
  • Richmond - Youth and senior hockey in Richmond dates back to 1973-74
  • Winston-Salem - The Winston-Salem Amateur Hockey Association was formed in 1974, with games beginning that fall
  • Birmingham - The Birmingham Hawks senior team was active by September 1975; Birmingham Amateur Hockey Association was in existence by 1978
  • Decatur - The Decatur Youth Hockey program was underway by the fall of 1976
  • Fayetteville (NC) - The Fort Bragg Dragons amateur team was active by 1977
  • Chattanooga - Amateur hockey began in the fall of 1978
  • Hillsborough - Youth hockey in Hillsborough goes back to 1980
  • Greenville (SC) - Amateur hockey was first played by the Greenville Hockey Club in 1980
  • Raleigh - The Raleigh Youth Hockey Association commenced activities in the fall of 1986
  • Charleston (SC) - Although occasional activities dated back to 1993, youth hockey in Charleston only became firmly established in 1997-98, when the Lowcountry Hockey Association was formed
  • Yorktown (VA) - The Peninsula Youth Hockey Association was formed in 1996
  • Florence - The Pee Dee Pride Youth Hockey Association and Florence Men's Hockey League began in 1998-99
  • Augusta - The Southern Ice Hockey Association formed youth and adult competitions for the 1999-2000 season
  • Columbia - Youth Hockey began in Columbia during the fall of 2001
  • Wilmington (NC) - The Wilmington Ice House opened in October 2004, and the Coastal Carolina Hockey Association was formed shortly thereafter, with teams playing in the CHL by 2005-06
  • Greenville (NC) - Amateur hockey in Greenville goes back to around 2005, with the East Carolina Hockey Association administering it; teams were playing in the CHL by 2007-08
  • Lynchburg - The Lynchburg Youth Hockey Association was formed in 2006
  • Greer - The Carolina Rage hockey program was in existence by 2018
