Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is one of three maritime provinces in Canada. It has a population of about 140,000 and its capital is Charlottetown.
History of hockey in Prince Edward Island
The first organized ice hockey games in Prince Edward Island were played in Charlottetown in 1885. "The hockey matches and band at the rink on Saturday night attracted a large number of spectators. The match was best two games out of three between the Red badges and White badges of the club. The Reds, under Captain Robins, won the first game in one hour and ten minutes. They also took the second after a shorter contest, notwithstanding the White's, under Captain Moore, played splendidly."[1] There were meetings held in January and February 1886, for the purpose of organizing a club and some games. "Hockey is at last to the fore. A meeting of those interested in the game will be held at the Citizen's Skating Rink at 8 o'clock sharp on Saturday evening next, after which a jolly good game may be expected."[2]
No further activities were reported for several years, until a game was played on February 7, 1890 at the Hillsborough Rink in Charlottetown. It was an intra-squad game made up of members of the Hillsborough Club and ended in an 8-8 tie. Another game was planned for February 28. The players were divided into east and west end sides. The Hillsborough Club also demonstrated the game in Summerside in 1890. Another game took place at the Hillsborough Rink on February 11, 1891, with West defeating East 4-0.[3] Two weeks later, the Charlottetown Hockey Club hosted a game, with the Liberals beating the Conservatives 3-1.[4] The two sides faced off again at Summerside on March 3, the Conservative team edging the Liberals 2-1.[5] The final game of the season was played on March 28.
On February 17, 1892 the Easts nipped the Wests 4-3 in a game for the Charlottetown Championship.[6] The All-Comers beat the Salvage Corps 2-1 on February 25.[7] The return game between East and West took place on March 4, and ended deadlocked at 1, allowing the Easts to retain the city title.[8] The All-Comers and Salvage Corps met again on March 16, with the latter team exacting revenge by a score of 2-1.[9] On March 23, the Wests shaded the Easts 2-1.[10] The Victoria Club became the second team to be established in Charlottetown in 1893. On January 20, the Easts defeated the Wests 3-1.[11] The Victoria Club staged their first game on February 14, with the English edging the Scots 4-3.[12] On March 10, the Civilians beat the Militia 3-0.[13]
On February 7, 1894, the Hillsborough Club beat the Victorias 3-1 to win the City Championship. For 1896-97, the newly-formed Charlottetown Abegweits, Victoria Club, and the Summerside Stars decided to compete for the PEI Senior Championship in a double round robin tournament. The Abegweits won the inaugural island title by defeating Summerside 4-3 on March 31, 1897.
The Abegweits, Vics, and Summerside Crystals dominated the PEI Senior League between 1897 and 1925. During this time period, the three clubs won 11, six, and five provincial titles, respectively. The 1905 championship was not awarded due to controversy over the playoffs, and there was no competition held from 1914-1920. The Abegweits were the first team from PEI to compete for the Maritime Championship in 1905. The Vics claimed three straight Maritimes Championships for the Starr Trophy between 1911 and 1913. PEI first competed for the Maritime Senior Championship in 1921-22, and the Levin Fur Company won the Maritime Junior Championship in 1931.
