History of hockey in Liechtenstein
The Liechtenstein Ice Hockey Federation was formed in 2000 and serves as the governing body of ice hockey in the country. Liechtenstein joined the IIHF on October 4, 2001.[1]
There is no national hockey league in the country. The first club, known as EHC Vaduz, was founded on July 2, 1996. Some other clubs were later established, including EHC Hurrican Hobes, EHC Clip Mountain, EHC Wildwings Blazers, HC Schellenberg and Schaan Forest Hot Stick. Stefan and Klaus Schingle, Martin Knopfel, and Martin Schlegel were instrumental in the development of the sport.
EHC Vaduz-Schellenberg was formed in May 2001 by the merger of EHC Vaduz and HC Schellenberg. Vaduz currently competes in the Austrian VEHL 2, but has also played in the Swiss 4.Liga in the past. They won the VEHL 2 championship in 2016. Due to the lack of an ice rink in Liechtenstein, the club is based at the Eisarena Widnau in Switzerland.
The Liechtensteiner National Team played its first international game in 2003, a friendly against Luxembourg, which they lost 7-1. Liechtenstein faced Luxembourg in another friendly in 2007, losing 4-2.[2]
