Egypt is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. Cairo is the capital and largest city.

History of hockey in Egypt

Egypt currently has 10 ice rinks in five cities in five different governorates. Out of those ten, there are three ice rinks in the capital city, Cairo, another three Sharm el-Sheikh, two in the 6th of October City, as well as one rink in Hurghada and another one in Borg El Arab. The biggest of those ice rinks is found in Sun City Mall in east Cairo that has a surface area of only 300 m2. Seven of the Egyptian rinks have ice grounds while three are wax rinks.[1]

The first club in Egypt, the Ice Hockey International School (IHIS), was formed in 2002.[2] This Egyptian amateur ice hockey team plays mainly in "Ice Planet Rink" in Maadi Family Land mall. In 2013, the team changed its name from IHIS to Capital Biko which means "Hawks of the Capital City" in the Egyptian language. This representative name identified the team until 2016 when it changed its name to Anubis.

A team known as the Pharaoh's Global Connection from Cairo participated in the 2008 World Pond Hockey Championships in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick.[3]

As of 2016, the administration of Anubis is working on establishing and launching the Egyptian Ice Hockey Federation in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports.[4] Anubis is also working with some Egyptian sports clubs and businessmen to build Egypt's first ice hockey rink with the standard international measurements of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

In 2012, IHIS organized Egypt's first Ramadani Championship which took place in Genena Mall Ice Rink in Nasry City District in east Cairo.[5]

IHIS divided its players into 8 teams who contested against each other in the championship and the team won its first trophy. Due to the parameters of the ice rink only being 290 m2, the teams were formed of 4 players each in addition to 2 substitute players.

In 2015, Anubis organized the second Ramadani Championship which was contested between six teams formed of Anubis's players, and the team won its 2nd national amateur trophy. The third Ramadani Championship was played from June 21-July 5, 2016. It was won by the Egypt Rangers.[6]

Anubis participated in the 2016 African Ice Hockey Cup in Rabat, Morocco. The club finished last in the six-team tournament after losing all three games they played in.[7] The Egyptian Pharaohs competed in the 2018 Arab Club Cup.

The Egyptian National Team made its debut in September 2017. They faced Lebanon (losing 5-0) and Morocco (winning 3-2) on the 2nd and 3rd in Saint-Laurent, Canada. Egypt later competed in the 2023 Arab Cup of Ice Hockey, taking seventh place.
