Universitatea Cluj

Universitatea Cluj is a sports club in Cluj, Romania. The club was founded in September 1919 by the "Sports Society of University Students" (Romanian: Societatea Sportivă a Studenților Universitari—abbreviated to "U"). Its first chairman was Professor Iuliu Hațieganu, a physician and politician.

Its hockey section was established in 1926. Among the club's first players were Hirsch, Buga, Lazar Sfera, and Nemes, who had previously played football. The 1925-26 Romanian Championship was scheduled to take place in Cluj on January 23-24, but the competition did not materialize.

In 1927-28, they played in the Romanian Championship final against Hockey Club Roman Bucharest. The match, won 3-0 by HCR, was staged in Cluj on January 29, 1928.

The club's participation in the championship was erratic, and in many seasons they just played friendly matches. In 1935 they qualified for the national championship, tying two games and losing once. Cluj also played in the championship in 1937 and were eliminated from the local (Liga Regionala de Centrala) competition the following year.

In 1940, "U" moved from Cluj to Sibiu and became known as Universitatea Sibiu as a result of the Second Vienna Award, when the northern part of Transylvania was ceded to Hungary. The sports club was later renamed Știința Cluj in 1946 and maintained a hockey team in the Romanian League until 1966. It then reverted back to its original name of Universitatea. Today, the "U" has no hockey program, but competes in the top-tier football classification.
