Herlev Eagles
The Herlev Eagles are an ice hockey team in Herlev, Denmark. The club currently fields teams in both the top-level Metal Ligaen and the second-level Danish Division 1.
History
The original club was founded in 1970 as Herlev IK. They became the Herlev Eagles in 1993 and later changed their name to the Herlev Hornets in 2005.
They won the 1. Division (then the top-level Danish league) in 1985, finishing first in the regular season in addition to claiming the playoff championship. Herlev has also been crowned champions of the second-level Danish league three times; in 1982, 1997, and 1999.
Prior to the 2009-10 season, Herlev was forced to withdraw from the AL-Bank Ligaen due to a lack of sponsorship revenue. However, the second team continued to participate in the second-level Division 1. The first team reverted back to their previous moniker, the Eagles, while the second outfit retained Hornets as their nickname.
The club re-acquired their license to participate in the AL-Bank Ligaen (now the Metal Ligaen) for the 2011-12 season.
