Sussex Daily News Cup
The Sussex Daily News Cup was an English tournament. Four teams participated in 1950 while three teams took part in 1951. The cup had initially served as a challenge trophy between the Brighton Tigers and the Richmond Hawks, and after the Hawks folded, the Earls Court Rangers.
On December 26, 1948, the Earl's Court Rangers beat the Brighton Tigers 7-3 in what was reported to be the first leg of the Sussex Daily News Cup.[1] No records exist of a second leg being played, but Brighton is documented as the winner of the cup in 1949.
In 1950, the Nottingham Panthers and Streatham were invited to join the competition. This allowed them to fill vacant dates until most of the players returned to Canada.
Nottingham won the 1950 competition on goal average over Earl's Court. The Panthers won their last game over Brighton 12-1, whereas on the previous night, Earl's Court had only defeated Streatham 10-3.
Earl's Court claimed the cup in 1951. The club had been the English National League favorites entering the season but finished in last place. The cup win provided some solace at the end of a disappointing season. Earl's Court, plagued by injuries all year, used the Harringay Racers' Joe Shack at the tournament.
