New Brunswick

First hockey game in Saint John: "A large audience assembled (by invitation) in the Palace rink last night [Feb. 17] to witness the hockey match between teams from the Saturday night club of the Victoria rink and the banks clerks. The game proved of great interest to the spectators, and will doubtless become in time very popular in St. John. The bank clerks were no match for their opponents, losing the match by a score of 12-2. Some of the players showed themselves to be very proficient. Other matches are expected."[1]

Second game in Saint John: "A large and fashionable audience gathered by invitation at the Palace rink, last night to witness the game of hockey between teams made up of the ban clerks and old boys of Lennoxville school. Dr. Esson and Mr. H.A.K. Drury officiated as umpires, and Mr. V.G.R. Vickers as referee. The game was very exciting at times, and won many friends. The bank clerks won by a score of 6-1. It is the intention of the St. Johns and bank clerks to give a grand benefit to the Springhill sufferers next week in the Palace."[2]

Third game in Saint John (match had been scheduled for the previous week, but was postponed): "The hockey match between the Bankers and Saturday Night Club came off in the Palace rink last night [Mar. 17], and proved very exciting. Saturday Night Club- H Godard, goal; G W Jones, H A K Drury and Dr Esson, forwards; R R Ritchie, point; V G R Vickers and A Adams, cover points. Mr B C B Boyd was referee. The first goal was captured by Dr. Esson in 10 minutes, the second by G W Jones in 5 minutes, the third by R R Ritchie in 15 minutes, the fourth by V G R Vickers in 10 minutes, the fifth by A Thomson in 15 minutes, the sixth by Vickers in 2 minutes, the seventh by Wilson in 3 minutes and the eighth by McKay in two minutes. Time was called, the score standing 5 goals to 3 in favor of the Saturday Night club. Fine play was made by McLean, McKay, Walker, Drury and Baxter. The teams thank the officers of the N B B A for the excellent programme rendered by the artillery band."[3]
