Hans Schmidt was a German goaltender.

Biography

He was a member of the German National Team at the European Championships in 1913. He played club hockey for SC Charlottenburg.

Schmidt was known as a colorful individual who played with a certain flare. This occasionally got him in trouble when he would attempt to make a routine save more challenging, and would wind up ceding an easy goal.

One notable instance occurred when he was playing for SC Charlottenburg in a match for the German Championship. He could have made an easy stick save, but instead tried to kick the puck aside. His skate got caught in the ice and the puck dribbled into the net for what proved to be the winning goal.

He had a voracious appetite, often eating three schnitzels or two pig knuckles without breaking a sweat. This greatly amused his teammates.

Schmidt was the proprietor of a cigar shop in Berlin. He eventually met and lived with a Yugoslav princess.
