This article details the history of amateur ice hockey in the Southern United States from 1963-1986:

Locales

  • Greensboro - There was youth hockey in Greensboro as early as 1961
  • Fort Lauderdale - The South Florida Hockey Association, comprised of Pee Wee, Junior, and Senior leagues, started in 1963
  • Knoxville - The Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association dated back to 1963
  • Huntsville - There was youth hockey played by 1963 and the Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association was soon formed
  • St. Petersburg - Youth hockey began in September 1966
  • Roanoke - Amateur hockey in Roanoke goes back to the late 1960s, when the Valley Youth Hockey Association was created
  • Charlotte - The Charlotte Hockey Association for amateur hockey was established in 1967
  • Atlanta - The Georgia Amateur Hockey Association was formed in 1972-3, after the arrival of the NHL's Atlanta Flames
  • Norfolk - A youth hockey program began in September 1972, the Greater Tidewater Minor Hockey Association was formed in early 1973, and the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association was established in 1975 (as the Peninsula Youth Hockey Association)
  • Nashville - Nashville Youth Hockey Association was discontinued in 1975
  • Birmingham - The Birmingham Amateur Hockey Association was in existence by 1977
  • Hillsborough - Youth hockey in Hillsborough goes back to 1980
  • Winston-Salem

The Knoxville and Greensboro PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget teams were set to play at the Knoxville Coliseum on March 7, 1964.

1970

The Southeastern Amateur Hockey League, a senior competition, was contested in the summer of 1970. Eight teams were reported to have formed the league: St. Petersburg Stars, West Palm Beach, Miami Flyers, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Memphis, Knoxville, and Charlotte.

The Atlanta Knights senior amateur team was formed and played their first games this year.

1971

A program from a July 31, 1971 game between the St. Petersburg Stars and West Palm Beach Bruins.

There were four teams in the Southeastern Amateur Hockey League in the summer of 1971: St. Petersburg Stars, Jacksonville, West Palm Beach Bruins, and Charlotte.

1972

The Charlotte Hockey Association hosted a tournament featuring teams from Huntsville and Washington in Squirt, PeeWee, Bsntam, and Midget Divisions at the Charlotte Coliseum on January 29 and 30, 1972.

The following teams were reported to be playing in the Southeastern Amateur Hockey League in the summer of 1972: St. Petersburg Stars, Tampa Twins, and the West Palm Beach Bruins. Charlotte, Jacksonville, Savannah, Atlanta, and Macon were also discussed as possibilities.

1972-73

There was a Silver Stick Tournament played at the Roanoke Valley Civic Center over New Years weekend. The Charlotte bantams won two games and finished third behind Washington and Huntsville. They beat Greensboro 5-4 and Roanoke 8-1. The peewees won once, thumping Greensboro 5-1. They were denied a shot at third place when they fell to Roanoke 5-3.

The Atlanta Amateur Hockey Association hosted a two-day, four-game series against PeeWee and Midget teams from Huntsville at the Igloo on March 31 and April 1, 1973.

1973-74

Southeastern Regional Silver Stick Tournament @ Charlotte Coliseum and Polar Palace

Teams from Charlotte, Roanoke, Washington, Charlottesville, Greensboro and St. Petersburg competed.

The Charlotte Midget team won the Southeastern District competition in Columbia, MD, and lost in the Mid-America Regionals in Totowa, NJ. The team went 18-6-1 on the year.

The Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association had a successful season. The Midget-Juveniles went 9-4, all four losses coming against a Mount Vernon team in Alexandria. The team had wins over Easton (MD), Washington, Hillsborough, and Fort Bragg. The Bantams were 5-2, PeeWees 9-8, and Squirts 5-5.

Youth

The 12th annual Queen City Tournament, hosted by Charlotte Amateur Hockey Association, was held st the Eastland Mall Ice Capades Chalet from February 28-March 3, 1985.

Hampton (VA) entered teams in a Mid-Atlantic Tournament in early April. The Squirts, Peewees, and Bantams were champions, while the Midget-Juveniles finished second.

1985-86

The 13th annual Queen City Tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather and illness. It was noted that the tournament was still going in 1991. The Charlotte travel teams, formerly known as the Blades, became the Jr. Checkers in 1993-94 with the arrival of the ECHL franchise of the same name.
