The Art Ross Cup was donated in 1912 to be awarded to the leading senior amateur hockey team in the Montreal area. These teams did not follow strict rules of player residency so they were not eligible for the Allan Cup.
The Art Ross Cup soon became emblematic of the Quebec provincial senior championship. Eventually it was challenged for by teams from the United States and eastern Ontario.
It was always a challenge trophy so there were multiple winners in several seasons.
