The Saint John Hockey League was formed in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1894 and consisted of the following teams: Bicycle, St. John Athletic (Hockey Club), Y.M.C.A. and the Victorias. The YMCA team was soon replaced by the Mohawks. The season began at the end of January, and games were usually held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at the Singer Rink, located on Charlotte Street.

The Saint John Hockey Club defeated the Bicyclists Hockey Club in the final for the 1894 championship. The Hockey Club defended their title in 1895, edging out the Mohawks 3-2 to secure the crown. The Mohawks won their first championship a year later, beating the Hockey Club 2-1. They repeated as champions in 1897. The Neptune Rowing Club joined the Saint John League for the 1898 season.
