The Deutsche Winterkampfspiele was contested every four years between 1922 and 1938. There was also a summer "Kampfspiele" staged during this period.
The competition was created after Germany was excluded from the Olympic Games following the aftermath of World War I. The games were only open to those part of the "German race".
Ice hockey tournaments were staged at all five winter competitions. The 1934 German Ice Hockey Championship was held in conjunction with the fourth Winterkampfspiele. The 1938 tournament featured junior (Jugend and Jungveits) teams.
