The Serie D was founded as the fourth-level of Italian ice hockey for the 2011-12 season. It replaced the old Serie C Interregionale in the Italian hockey system.
For 2013-14, the league once again became known as the Serie C Interregionale, however its champions were not classified as part of the Serie C (which was known as the Serie B).
The South Tyrolean teams did not participate in this competition, instead taking part in the CCM-Cup.
The league was not contested in 2014-15.
