The Landesliga served as the second level of ice hockey in Germany until the 1958-59 season, when it was dropped down to the third level following the creation of the Eishockey-Bundesliga. It served as the third level league through the 1960-61 season, after which the Gruppenliga was created as the new third tier. It was divided into multiple regions with the top teams from each region qualifying for the promotion round, which gave them the opportunity to be promoted to the Oberliga.

Promotion rounds

  • 1951-52: Rot-Weiß Berlin (North) and TEV Miesbach (South) qualified for the promotion round of the Oberliga.
  • 1952-53: SC Weßling was promoted to the Oberliga and Rot-Weiß Berlin qualified for the promotion round.
  • 1953-54: Mannheim was promoted to the Oberliga and Rosenheim qualified for the promotion round.
  • 1954-55: Dusseldorfer EG was promoted to the Oberliga and TEV Miesbach qualified for the promotion round (in which they forfeited).
  • 1955-56: North: Berliner SC (Berlin regional champion), Hamburg SC (Hamburg regional champion), and WSV Braunlage (Lower Saxony regional champion) declined to participate in the promotion round, so Cologne (Nordrhein-Westfalen regional champion) was promoted to the Oberliga. South: Mannheimer ERC was promoted to the Oberliga.
  • 1956-57: North: Berliner SC qualified for the promotion round to the Oberliga. South: EV Landshut (Bavarian Landesliga) champion was promoted to the Oberliga.
  • 1957-58: North: Berliner SC and Eintracht Dortmund were promoted to the Oberliga. South: SC Ziegelweis and TEV Miesbach (which finished second in the Bavarian Landesliga) were promoted to the Oberliga.
  • 1958-59: North: Brandenburg-Preussen Berlin won the promotion round but declined to be promoted. South: EV Landsberg was promoted to the Oberliga, as was ERV Ravensburg (the runner-up), due to the league expanding.
