The 1978-79 Oberliga season was the sixth season of the league as the third level of ice hockey in Germany. Deggendorfer SC won the championship and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga along with Schwenninger ERC and Herner EV.

TSV Peißenberg and ERC Sonthofen were set to be relegated to the Regionalliga. As the Oberliga South was increased to 16 teams for next season, TSV Peißenberg remained in the league.
