The 1978-79 DDR-Bestenermittlung season was the ninth edition of the unofficial competition formed after the restructuring of East German hockey in 1970. Eight teams participated in the tournament, held in March 1979, which was won by BSG Monsator Berlin.

Chemie Rostock withdrew from the competition and as a result was sent directly to the relegation round. Hohenstein-Ernstthal then took their place in the competition, a participation which was regarded as unofficial, so their ranking was not assigned in the standings.
