Southern Amateur Hockey (1963-1975)
This article details the history of amateur ice hockey in the Southern United States from 1963-1986:
Locales
- Greensboro - There was youth hockey in Greensboro as early as 1961
- Fort Lauderdale - The South Florida Hockey Association, comprised of Pee Wee, Junior, and Senior leagues, started in 1963
- Knoxville - The Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association dated back to 1963
- Huntsville - There was youth hockey played by 1963 and the Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association was soon formed
- St. Petersburg - Youth hockey began in September 1966
- Roanoke - Amateur hockey in Roanoke goes back to the late 1960s, when the Valley Youth Hockey Association was created
- Charlotte - The Charlotte Hockey Association for amateur hockey was established in 1967
- Atlanta - The Georgia Amateur Hockey Association was formed in 1972-73, after the arrival of the NHL's Atlanta Flames; Atlanta Knights dated back to 1969
- Norfolk - A youth hockey program began in September 1972, the Greater Tidewater Minor Hockey Association was formed in early 1973, and the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association was established in 1975 (as the Peninsula Youth Hockey Association)
- Nashville - Nashville Youth Hockey Association was formed in 1964
- Birmingham - The Birmingham Amateur Hockey Association was in existence by 1979
- Hillsborough - Youth hockey in Hillsborough goes back to 1980
- Winston-Salem - The Winston-Salem Amateur Hockey Association was formed in 1974, with games beginning that fall

Knoxville teams played in a the Capitol Invitational Tournament in Washington DC in early March. The Bantams beat Mexico City, Mexico 4-0 to earn a place in the final against Washington, who they edged 4-2. The Peewees fell 3-0 to Detroit, but beat Washington 3-0 in a consolation game, and the Squirts bowed 5-0 to Indianapolis, and also lost 2-1 to Washington in the consolation. The Juvenile Knoxville Jr. Knights went down 5-4 to Washington, downed Baltimore 6-1 at Baltimore, and beat Hershey 7-2 in exhibition games.

Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam teams from Knoxville competed in the Capital Invitation Tournament in Washington in March. The Squirts lost 7-0 to the Washington Tigers, the Peewees 2-1 to the same club, and the Bantams 7-0 to the New Jersey Rockets. In the consolation games, the Bantams fell 3-1 to the Baltimore Optimists, the Peewees beat the Maryland Bullets 5-2, and the Squirts tied the Baltimore Optimists 3-3.

Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, and Juvenile teams from Knoxville competed in the Capitol Invitational Tournament in Washington in late February. The Bantam team beat Chevy Chase 7-0 and won the championship, 6-2 over Washington. The Squirts and Peewees were eliminated by Huntsville, 2-1 and 2-0, respectively. The Squirts lost their first game 4-1 to Washington, and the Peewees were blasted 6-0 by Baltimore. The Jr. Knights Juveniles fell 1-0 to Washington and 5-1 to Loyola of Chicago. Baltimore won the Peewee and Juvenile Division titles, while Washington captured the Squirt Division.

The Southeastern Amateur Hockey League, a senior competition, was contested in the summer of 1970. Eight teams were reported to have formed the league: St. Petersburg Stars, West Palm Beach, Miami Flyers, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Memphis, Knoxville, and Charlotte.

In the Capitol Invitational Tournament in Washington in mid-February, the Knoxville Squirt team beat Huntsville 2-1, reaching the final against Baltimore. The Peewees lost 5-2 to Livingston (NJ) and 4-0 to Washington, the Bantams fell 2-1 to Washington, before bating Chevy Chase 3-2, and the Juveniles bowed 2-1 to Baltimore and by the same score to Washington in overtime.
1970-71
There were four teams in the Southeastern Amateur Hockey League in the summer of 1971: St. Petersburg Stars, Jacksonville, West Palm Beach Bruins, and Charlotte.

In the Capitol Invitational Tournament in Washington in early March, the Knoxville Squirts beat Washington 3-2, while the Peewees fell 10-0 to Washington, and the Bantams lost by the same score to New York City. On the second day, the Peewees lost 7-1 to Columbus, while the Bantams beat Philadelphia 4-1. The Squirts were set to play in the final against New York City.
On March 28, Roanoke's 11-Under team beat Greensboro 4-2. In the 11-14 age group, Greensboro edged Roanoke 5-3, and Greensboro's 15-Over team nipped them 2-1.
1971-72
The Charlotte Hockey Association hosted a tournament featuring teams from Huntsville and Washington in Squirt, PeeWee, Bsntam, and Midget Divisions at the Charlotte Coliseum on January 29 and 30, 1972.
The following teams were reported to be playing in the Southeastern Amateur Hockey League in the summer of 1972: St. Petersburg Stars, Tampa Twins, and the West Palm Beach Bruins. Charlotte, Jacksonville, Savannah, Atlanta, and Macon were also discussed as possibilities.

There was a Silver Stick Tournament played at the Roanoke Valley Civic Center over New Years weekend. The Charlotte bantams won two games and finished third behind Washington and Huntsville. They beat Greensboro 5-4 and Roanoke 8-1. The peewees won once, thumping Greensboro 5-1. They were denied a shot at third place when they fell to Roanoke 5-3.

There was also an annual youth tournament, the Georgia Invitational, that began in Atlanta in March 1974. The St. Louis Chiefs won the Junior Division, edging Knoxville 6-5 in double overtime, while Winnipeg thrashed Knoxville 15-0 in the Squirt finals. The Knoxville Peewees finished second at the American Hockey Association tournament in Princeton the in late March. They had a 2-1-1 record, beating Toledo 6-5 and Lawrenceville (who went 0-3), and losing 4-2 to Livingston. Livingston and Toledo had the same record as Knoxville, and Toledo won the championship with a better goal differential.

The Bantams topped Valley Forge 3-1, Middle Pennsylvania 5-2, and Benfield 4-3.

The 12th annual Queen City Tournament, hosted by Charlotte Amateur Hockey Association, was held st the Eastland Mall Ice Capades Chalet from February 28-March 3, 1985.
Hampton (VA) entered teams in a Mid-Atlantic Tournament in early April. The Squirts, Peewees, and Bantams were champions, while the Midget-Juveniles finished second.

1985-86
The 13th annual Queen City Tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather and illness. It was noted that the tournament was still going in 1991. The Charlotte travel teams, formerly known as the Blades, became the Jr. Checkers in 1993-94 with the arrival of the ECHL franchise of the same name.

The Roanoke PeeWees won the Mid-Atlantic Championship in mid-February by beating Hampton Roads 5-3 and 6-1. The Squirts won the Stone Mountain Invitational Tournament in Georgia in mid-March. They beat Atlanta, Knoxville, and Charlotte, and lost one game to Huntsville, before coming back to beat the Alabama side 4-1 in the final. The Mite team won the Hillsborough Mite Invitational Tournament after beating Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Hillsborough.
