To celebrate the opening of the Union Ice Rink in Johannesburg, the South African Ice Hockey Association invited the Austrian club, Wiener EV, to play against several South African squads.
WEV, buttressed by several players from Wiener AC and EK Engelmann Wien, won six of the eight matches played against the various South African squads, only falling once to and tying an all-star team. The South African teams consisted mainly of Canadian expats.
The tour lasted a total of two-and-a-half months, with 32 days spent sailing to-and-from South Africa. The games were played between June 24 and July 15, 1937.
The "South African All-Stars" were composed of the following players: Goaltender: F.J. de Jong (Lions). Defenseman: J.B. Barregar (Lions), H. Lowenheim (Mohawks) and J. Ratledge (Maple Leafs). Forwards: J. E. Riddell, W.R. Thomas and R.E. Palmer (all Maple Leafs), J.C. Britton (Mohawks), R. Desilets (Lions) and W. Oppenheim (Mohawks).
