The Natal Summer League was first contested in 1995 and was in its third year by 1997. The Kwa Zulu-Natal Open League was organized by the Natal (Durban) Sharks during the early 2000s. In August 2009 it was reported that "The Kwazulu-Natal league is made up of two teams which both play out of the same rink. The rink in Durban, where the teams are based is half the size of a regulation ice hockey rink."[2]
The Sharks remained active until 2012. That year a new team, the Durba Knights, was founded. The Southern Storm were formed in 2015, and the Durban Rays joined the fray in 2016.
