The Alpen Cup was first contested in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1960-61, and was competed for a total of 13 times. EC KAC, EC Kitzbühel, SG Cortina, and HC Bolzano participated in the inaugural tournament, with Cortina winning, ahead of KAC. KAC won the tournament five times (sharing first place with SG Cortina in 1968-69), SG Cortina captured the crown on three occasions, and HC Bolzano, Innsbrucker EV, the Yugoslav National Team, HC La Chaux-de-Fonds, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, and HK Jesenice all won it once.

In 1962-63, a Swiss team competed for the first time, with HC Davos taking part, and the following year, Innsbrucker EV joined, immediately winning the tournament. In 1964-65, a German team made an appearance, with EC Bad Tölz participating, and the year after, the Yugoslav National Team debuted.
