The Bay of Quinte League began operating in the Bay of Quinte District of Ontario in the 1896-97 season and featured teams from Belleville, Deseronto, Napanee, Picton & Trenton in it's first few seasons. The teams competed for the Corby Cup, which was donated by hotel owner and M.P. of Belleville, H. Corby.
The tournament to crown the first winner of the Corby Cup in 1895 featured 4 teams (Belleville Y.M.C.A., Belleville Quintes, Deaf & Dumb Institute "Mutes" and the Trenton Hockey Club) but owing to the lateness of the season, the referee declared the final game between the Y.M.C.A. & Trenton off due to bad ice and neither team would agree to reschedule it before the end of the season.
