The Ukrainian SSR Championship was a competition staged in Ukraine when the country was part of the Soviet Union, and known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The first edition was contested in 1941, and won by Spartak Lviv.
History
After the annexation of the Western Ukrainian lands and the Baltic states by the USSR in 1939, hockey competitions were organized in the territories during the winter of 1940. A USSR Championship was set to take place, with the participation of Baltic and Ukrainian teams (teams of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Lviv, Drohobych, and Ternopil). Several matches were played involving the Baltic teams, with the Estonians defeating the Lithuanians 2-1 and 2-0, and the Latvians beating the Estonians 4-0 and 2-1. The Ukrainians also nominated their representative for the final of the championship - Lviv. However, warm weather in March prevented the final between Lviv and Latvia from taking place.
In 1941, the idea of staging a USSR Championship was abandoned, and the Ukrainian SSR Championship was set up. No competitions were staged from 1942-1947, but they resumed in 1948. The early years were dominated by Lokomotiv Kharkiv, who won four consecutive titles from 1948-1952.
