The '''Serie D''' was founded as the fourth-level of [[Italy|Italian]] ice hockey for the 2011-12 season. It replaced the old [[Serie C]] Interregionale in the Italian hockey system. 

For 2013-14, the league once again became known as the '''Serie C Interregionale''', however its champions were not classified as part of the Serie C (which was known as the Serie B). 

The South Tyrolean teams did not participate in this competition, instead taking part in the [[Leghe amatoriali altoatesine di hockey su ghiaccio|CCM-Cup]].

The league was not contested in 2014-15.
